Being better

Reading Jack Welch's book about being the CEO of GE has me interested in the approach of pushing people to perform. Jack Welch isn't shy about paying the most skilled guy a huge premium.
In today's world where everyone is demanding a more balanced level of reward (so that there isn't that huge gap between the boss and his staff) we can see many companies have been following Jack Welch's example.
Is it working? Well profits in the US have been up a huge amount over the last few years. That must mean it's working!

It seems to me that paying people huge rewards gets them focused on money and shorter term results. However huge profits are not sustainable. We all know about the waves of change.
Perhaps we can smooth them out by getting our CEO to attend to longer term goals.. New situations require different solutions. There is nothing as constant as change
